This area was one of the last bastions of the Moors on the road to Granada and there are a number of historic buildings and monuments, particularly the Alcazaba fortress, neoclassical Mausoleum of Narvaez, the Hermitage of Jesus Nazareno and a number of churches of note. Close to Loja is the famous village of Riofrio with its trout and salmon trout farms and where there are a large number of restaurants - here you can also choose from the many other local delicacies. Ideal location for visiting Granada, the coast approximately 1 hour away and similar time to the Sierra Nevadas and the skiing.
Within minutes of the town are a number of tiny hamlets, the town of Salar nestled among the hills, and the larger town of Huetor-Tajar which is famous for growing asparagus. A scenic route across the mountains will take you through the villages of Zafarraya or Alfarnate, each leading down winding roads to the lake at La Vinuela and on to Torre del Mar on the coast. Loja is a very good centre with a direct route to Malaga and Granada airports and regular bus and train services.
